MoCI Launches "The Liberian Markeplace"

December 18, 2014 - The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has the mandate to promote trade and commerce in the Republic of Liberia. In its quest to promoting, developing, and expanding commercial and industrial activities throughout Liberia under the stewardship of Hon. Axel M. Addy, the MoCI established The Liberian Marketplace (TLM) to provide local and international market exposures to Liberian MSMEs, particularly those into the production of goods and services. Located on Tubman Boulevard adjacent to the Education Ministry, and supported by the Enhanced Integrated Framework - Special Project Implementation Unit (EIF-SPIU) of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, the Trade Store was launched on December 18, 2014 with 18 vendors in Monrovia. The program, which was launched by the Vice President of Liberia, H. E. Ambassador Joseph N. Boakai, was also graced by Government officials, the Liberia Chamber of Commerce and other hosts of dignitaries including United States Embassy accredited near Monrovia.

The Liberian Marketplace was established to showcase Liberian-made products (Made in Liberia) as a means of providing market access for Liberian Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in small to medium industries and agro-processing. In addition to providing local and international exposures, the establishment of the “Liberian Marketplace” emanated from the National Trade Fair held in September 2011 by the EIF-SPIU-MoCI and the April 2013 MSME Conference that showcased and promoted Liberian made products from about 200 innovative MSMEs. In continuation of this initiative and in line with the Ministry’s vision to promote and provide market linkage for Liberian MSMEs, Falama Inc, a local Liberian enterprise, was contracted to manage the day-to-day activities of the trade store. The objectives of the Liberian Marketplace include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing local and international market linkages for Liberian made products;
  • Increasing value addition and income for MSMEs;
  • Work with and empower Small Medium Industries for export readiness;
  • Increasing the number of MSMEs in the formal sector through the formalization of the informal sector; and
  • Encouraging and promoting local production for local and international markets, etc.
